The Pearl, the oldest known gem:
The Pearl is the oldest known gem. The Latin word for pearl means ‘unique’ as no two pearls are identical. Pearls the world over have been collected and worn for their beauty, tremendous value and magical powers. Historically natural pearls were the greatest treasure of all representing an incomparable value. Today cultured fresh water pearls from China represent a true likeness to the natural pearl. The Chinese were the first to culture a pearl from freshwater mussels. The cultured fresh water pearl is composed of nacre, the same substance which coats the irritant and is found in the natural fresh water or salt water pearl. Pearls range in size from 5 mm to 9 mm. Luster is the most important factor in distinguishing pearl quality.
